There are many different types of people that will visit your music website. Your fans might go to your website to read your latest news, or to buy your new music. You can also use your website to compile promotional material about your career, and your music, for the media to peruse.

Creating an EPK on your website is a surefire way to make sure your audience finds what they are looking for, whether it’s a music supervisor, talent buyer, or blogger.

What is a band EPK?

An EPK, or electronic press kit, is a digital version of a promotional package that musicians used to mail out to venues, festivals, or talent buyers. EPKs are regularly used as a general online resume that sums up a musician's career to date. A band can use their EPK to help with booking shows, generating buzz around an upcoming album release, and as a way to share music with bloggers and journalists.

When you create a band EPK, you’ll want to make it easy to promote and send out to radio, industry, and venue bookers. With this in mind, a great spot to make your EPK is on your own music website. That way, you can send out the dedicated page link with everything needed to promote your show, or your new album.

What should be in a band EPK?

An effective band EPK should include everything the press needs, from your official bio, to promotional photos, press, awards, and music. The idea behind an EPK is to create a seamless way for the press or industry to easily access all of the assets they might need to highlight your new music or project.

You’ll want to create a band EPK that showcases your musical career, and tells your story. This should be paramount in every element that you include, from your images to the songs that you add.

1. Your musician bio

The first element to include in your EPK is your bio. Adding your musician bio upfront is a nice way to introduce yourself to a promoter or venue. Add a few sentences that sum yourself up (or your band), talking about your genre of music, to a recent accomplishment. This is your elevator pitch; it’s the way you might introduce yourself quickly in person.

Keep in mind that bookers and festivals have different needs and word limits for bios, so it’s a good idea to include different versions of yours here. In addition to your elevator pitch (1-2 sentences), include a short bio (1 paragraph), a medium bio (2+ paragraphs) and a long bio (4+ paragraphs).

If you’d like to keep your EPK looking streamlined, these versions of your bio can be added as downloadable files. Or, you can write out a short musician bio followed by a long bio, keeping in mind someone may copy and paste parts of it.

2. Promotional photos

Include a section in your EPK with downloadable photos. If you’re preparing for a photoshoot, consider the kinds of photos, and the sizing you’ll need for your band’s EPK. These should be your official promotional photos, and they should be good quality. That way they can easily be used in print, or exported and used for online promotion or in press
